Gold stars for Europe. All but one of the top-ten countries that consume the greatest share of their energy from renewable-energy sources are based in Europe, according to Bloomberg calculations of data in the annual British Petroleum Statistical Review of World Energy.
In Denmark—the global leader—more than one quarter of its energy-consumption needs come from renewable sources (mostly wind), while in the U.S., only 3.1 percent of energy consumption is generated from renewables.
New Zealand is the non-European country with high renewable-energy consumption at just shy of 12 percent of total energy used.
