EU Updates Chemical Classification Law

The European Commission June 14 updated the European Union’s regulation on the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP Regulation, (EC) No 1272/2008) to bring it into line with recent changes to the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

The commission, the EU’s executive arm, said that several technical modifications had been made to the GHS, including “a clarification of classification criteria for some hazard classes and a new test method for oxidising solids,” and “a rationalization of the list of precautionary statements.”
