EU Taps Commissioners to Oversee Climate, Environment Protection

A veteran Dutch politician fluent in six languages and a 28-year-old Lithuanian economy minister will lead the European Union’s climate and environment efforts through 2024.

Ursula von der Leyen, the former German defense minister who will take over as president of the European Commission Nov. 1, nominated Frans Timmermans as the commission’s executive vice president for the Green New Deal for Europe, and Virginijus Sinkevicius as commissioner for environment and oceans.
