EU Chemicals Agency Lists Substances As Candidates for Restriction Under REACH

BRUSSELS—The European Chemicals Agency Jan. 13 formalized the listing of 14 substances on a “candidate list” for restriction under the European Union’s REACH chemicals legislation.

The listing means the substances are provisionally considered to be “substances of very high concern” (SVHCs), or substances that potentially pose very serious risks to humans and the environment.

The 14 substances added to the candidate list are five variations of anthracene oil and paste, a form of coal tar used in manufacturing electrodes, aluminosilicate refractory ceramic fibers, zirconia aluminosilicate, 2,4-dinitrotoluene, diisobutyl phthalate, lead chromate, tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate, and two lead-based pigments.
