The European Union’s food watchdog said it found no “critical areas of concern” with one of the world’s most widely used weedkillers, an assessment that will help inform the bloc’s decision later this year on whether the product should stay on the market.

An EU permit allowing farmers to use glyphosate is set to expire in December, prompting a fierce debate among member states over whether to extend it. While the herbicide allows farmers to tackle weeds in cereal crops, vineyards and orchards, it has been dogged by concerns about its impact on nature and human health.
