Ethiopia plans to start producing electricity from a disputed hydropower dam on the Nile River, after the government completed the second phase of filling the giant reservoir.
Water is overflowing at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Water, Irrigation and Energy Minister Seleshi Bekele said on Twitter on Monday.
“The result is we have enough water to operationalize two turbines,” he said. Power production is expected to start in “the coming months” at the facility, which once completed will have the capacity to produce 6,000 megawatts.
