EPA’s AI Projects Fall Short in Cataloging Use, GAO Finds

The EPA’s inventory of artificial intelligence projects is beset by some shortcomings, according to a Government Accountability Office report.

Those findings—which were common across several other agencies—spotlight some of the risks AI poses to the federal bureaucracy, which the White House is trying to seal up under an October executive order.

“Given the rapid growth in capabilities and widespread adoption of AI, the federal government must manage its use of AI in a responsible way to minimize risk, achieve intended outcomes, and avoid unintended consequences,” the GAO said in the report released Tuesday.
