Work on an $8 million project to stop the flow of mercury-contaminated water into the Deer Lake “area of concern” near Lake Superior in Michigan is complete, and the area could be delisted from the ranks of the most contaminated sites as early as next year, the Environmental Protection Agency said.
The project was funded by two grants to the city of Ishpeming, Mich., to divert Partridge Creek away from an abandoned mine that was causing contaminated water to flow into Deer Lake, which flows into Lake Superior.
