EPA to Reconsider GE New England Site Cleanup Plan

General Electric could cut down its cleanup costs at a New England Superfund site after an appeals board said the EPA must justify an order requiring the company to dump contaminated sludge in a permitted landfill rather than on-site.

The Environmental Appeals Board ordered the Environmental Protection Agency Jan. 26 to reconsider its plan for where the company should dump its waste and for future cleanup work on the Housatonic River, which runs through Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The EPA said it is “carefully reviewing the decision.”
