EPA to Face Water Permit Staff Hurdles to Comply With High Court

Wastewater discharge permits the EPA issues to cities will likely take more time and staff following a US Supreme Court ruling this week at a time when the Trump administration is cutting the agency’s workforce.

The Environmental Protection Agency under the March 4 ruling in City and County of San Francisco v. EPA must now provide new details to wastewater systems about the steps they need to take to prevent water pollution under the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System. The NPDES permits, which govern pollution from sewer overflows during storms, will now require more intense attention from agency staff.
