EPA Tentatively Settles Lawsuit Over Drinking Water Contaminants

The EPA has reached a tentative settlement with three environmental groups to resolve a lawsuit over the agency’s alleged inaction in meeting its federal drinking water obligations.

In a notice published Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency agreed to examine several drinking water contaminants that include toxic metals as well as chemicals used in dry cleaning.

The EPA agreed by July 31, 2024, to revise drinking water standards for disease-causing bacteria and parasites such as those responsible for Legionnaire’s disease, the most deadly waterborne illness in the U.S., and giardiasis, a diarrheal disease.
