EPA Sued Over Conclusions About Drinking Water Chemical’s Risks

Three environmental groups are challenging the EPA’s final conclusions on the risks posed by 1,4-dioxane, a chemical found in drinking water supplies.

The Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club, and Environmental Working Group asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to hear their case against the final conclusions the Environmental Protection Agency published Jan. 8.

“The risk evaluation ignores major ways people are exposed to the chemical—including through drinking water and on-the-job exposure of millions of workers—despite clear requirements in the law to evaluate those exposures,” the three groups said in announcing their petition. “EPA also illegally failed ...
