A final cleanup plan to dredge contaminated sediment from the Gowanus Canal in New York City and cap the dredged areas of the heavily polluted waterway has been set by the Environmental Protection Agency, with an estimated cost of $506 million.
The plan, announced by the EPA Sept. 30, includes controls to reduce sewage overflows and other land-based contamination sources that could compromise the cleanup.
A historically industrial transportation route that also runs through residential neighborhoods, the canal is one of the most seriously contaminated U.S. bodies of water, the agency said.
