The EPA should increase audits of private sector groups that verify whether cleaning and other products qualify for its Safer Choice label, the agency’s internal watchdog said Tuesday.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s voluntary program also should set clear goals to increase its accountability to Congress and the public, the Office of Inspector General’s report said.
Safer Choice allows companies with products containing chemicals proven to meet strict environmental and health criteria to bear an EPA label. Having that label can increase consumer and commercial sales and can help them achieve their own sustainability commitments.
