EPA Proposes to Add First-Ever Navajo Site to Superfund List

March 30, 2023, 7:23 PM UTC

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to add the Lukachukai Mountains Mining District to the Superfund National Priorities List, according to EPA Thursday.

The site, located entirely on the Navajo Nation, holds over a hundred waste piles stemming from uranium mining, the agency said. If listed on the NPL, it would become the first Navajo site ever placed on the Superfund List.

EPA has already overseen evaluations at multiple mine waste piles to find cleanup alternatives. Solidifying a place on the list will allow EPA additional resources toward cleanup of the site, according to the agency.
