EPA Names Ex-Wisconsin Regulator as Region 5 Administrator

Kurt Thiede, a former Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources deputy secretary, will succeed Cathy Stepp as EPA Region 5 regional administrator.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler on Jan. 8 announced his appointment of Thiede, praising his commitment to public service.

In a separate message to EPA employees, Wheeler said Thiede will start his new job Jan. 18. Region 5 has a focus on Great Lakes protection and oversees agency activity in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Thiede currently serves as chief of staff to Stepp, a position he’s held since early 2018.
