The EPA defeated a challenge to a general permit allowing oil and gas companies in the central and western areas of the Gulf of Mexico to discharge limited pollutants into the surrounding waters, according to an Aug. 30 opinion from the Fifth Circuit.
The environmental groups who took issue with the permit couldn’t show that potential discharges from offshore platforms would actually reach the specific areas of the Gulf their members use and enjoy, Judge Andrew S. Oldham said for the court.
