EPA Funding Cuts to ‘Thriving Communities’ Program Spur Lawsuit

Three nonprofits are challenging the Environmental Protection Agency’s order to slash a block grant program designed to promote climate and environmental justice.

The EPA’s cuts specifically target grant programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion, say Green & Healthy Homes Initiative Inc., the Minneapolis Foundation, and Philanthropy Northwest. The move is unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and violates federal environmental law, the groups said in their lawsuit filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the District of Maryland.
