States now have a longer runway to submit plans to reduce pollutants that cause haze buildup in national parks, according to a rule finalized Tuesday.
The Clean Air Act requires states to submit State Implementation Plans, or SIPs, that lay out proposals to reduce air emissions that contribute to visibility-reducing haze. Those plans are then approved or disapproved by the EPA, which must then come up with a federal plan if a SIP doesn’t meet requirements.
