EPA, Delaware Reach Deal on $41.6 Million Superfund Settlement

A 27-acre sand and gravel Superfund site in Delaware took a big step Tuesday toward cleanup with the EPA and Delaware announcing a $41.6 million tentative settlement to end decades of wrangling over who should pay for the project.

Roughly 550,000 cubic yards of construction debris and industrial waste, including at least 13,000 drums of hazardous substances, were recovered from what was once a gravel and sand quarry in cleanup operations dating to 1969. The Environmental Protection Agency added the landfill in New Castle, Del., to its Superfund National Priorities List in 1981.
