EPA Defends Process in Finalizing More Stringent Coke Oven Rules

Stricter regulations on emissions from steel manufacturing fuel are fully Clean Air Act compliant, according to a response brief filed Tuesday by the Environmental Protection Agency.

New rules finalized in May that aim to stem pollution from coke ovens are well supported by technical analysis, the EPA told the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) that set the minimum emissions control for emission sources are also supported by industry’s “own emissions data achieved by the top-performing facilities,” the EPA says.
