EPA Chooses Groundwater Cleanup Plan for N.J. Superfund Site

The EPA signed off on a $2.8 million groundwater cleanup plan for a former iron mining district in New Jersey on Thursday.

The Passaic County, N.J., Superfund site, known as Ringwood Mines/Landfill, was added to the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priorities List in 1983, removed from the list after cleanup ended, then re-added in 2006 after additional paint sludge was discovered.

  • The EPA said contaminants at the site include 1,4-dioxane, a solvent in household cleaning and personal care products, and benzene, a carcinogen.
