North Carolina environmental groups said Wednesday they want the federal government to take over water pollution permitting in the state because lawmakers are neutering environmental regulators’ ability to control PFAS pollution in local waterways.
The Southern Environmental Law Center petitioned the EPA to withdraw North Carolina’s National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting authority. The SELC says the state General Assembly passed laws that stack North Carolina’s Rules Review Commission and Environmental Management Commission with partisans hostile to regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution that would keep the Cape Fear River and other waterways clean.
