EPA Approval of Chevron Plastics-to-Fuel Plan Draws Lawsuit

A Mississippi community group sued the Environmental Protection Agency on Friday for approving a petrochemical project they say poses a massive cancer risk.

Cherokee Concerned Citizens filed the petition for review at the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, alleging that the agency’s greenlight for Chevron USA Inc.’s request to make fuel from plastic waste violates the Toxic Substances Control Act.

Under that law, the EPA cannot approve new chemicals with severe toxic risk without implementing ways to mitigate that risk, according to the group.
