Environmental groups are challenging changes to coal mining regulations in Montana that they claim will weaken environmental protections and failed to go through the federal review process.
The Montana Environmental Information Center, Sierra Club, WildEarth Guardians, and Citizens for Clean Energy filed the lawsuit Thursday against the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and its officials in the US District Court for the District of Montana, asking for a ruling that stops enforcement of the new laws until each step of the federal review process is completed.
