Environmental Groups Seek Probe of South African Gas Power Deal

Environmental groups in South Africa called on parliament to stage public hearings into the government’s selection of Karpowership, which generates electricity from vessels that burn liquefied natural gas, as a preferred bidder to supply power to the grid.

“Civil-society organizations and communities all along the coast of South Africa have raised significant concerns about this choice of emergency power, which will tie us into fossil fuels for at least a further 20 years,” more than a dozen groups, including The Green Connection and groundWork, said in a letter to lawmakers.
