Engie Eyes Clean Power Cheaper Than Coal for Heavy Industries

Engie SA aims to become the first utility to offer cheap renewable power to steelmakers and other power-hungry users without having to rely on burning fossil fuels and nuclear as a back stop.

Utilities currently rely on coal or other alternatives to provide a steady supply of electricity to keep grids working because much renewable energy is erratic -- it only works when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

Advances in hydrogen-fuel-cell and grid-management software combined with cheaper batteries and renewable energy may make it possible for Engie to offer renewable power that’s cheaper than coal sooner ...
