Energy Use Data Collection Is Unlawful, Crypto Groups Say (1)

A cryptocurrency industry association and one of its members sued to stop the Energy Department from collecting their electricity use data.

The DOE, Energy Information Administration, and the Office of Management and Budget violated the Paperwork Reduction Act and Administrative Procedure Act in seeking the data, the Texas Blockchain Council and Riot Platforms Inc. told the US District Court for the Western District of Texas on Thursday.

The lawsuit comes after the EIA released a report finding that electricity usage from crypto mining represented 0.6% to 2.3% of all the country’s demand in 2023. The agency plans to collect monthly ...
