The Energy Department plans to request proposals for national interest electric transmission corridors by this fall, a department official said Tuesday, a renewed effort by the US to back power grid projects where reliability and affordability are threatened.
The national interest designation, which can range in length up to several hundred miles, would unlock federal financing tools, including a $2.5 billion public-private partnership program established by the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law and a $2 billion loan program set up by the Inflation Reduction Act passed last summer.
