The Energy Department proposed Wednesday new efficiency standards for distribution transformers, a move to expand innovation for power grid equipment coming under supply chain stress.
The department’s standard, if finalized, would require all transformers to use amorphous steel cores, a more energy-efficient technology than traditional, grain-oriented electrical steel. Officials want the new rule to take effect by 2027.
