A coalition of environmental groups accused the federal government of violating the Endangered Species Act by failing to protect bison herds in and around Yellowstone National Park.
The Yellowstone herds, which consist of two distinct subpopulations, are the last bison still living in their natural habitat that show no signs of crossbreeding with domestic cattle, according to the May 15 complaint. That makes them irreplaceable, the suit says.
