Enbridge Line 5 Too Risky for Michigan, Environmentalists Claim

Michigan does not have adequate assurance that money would be available to clean up an oil spill should one occur from Enbridge Inc.'s pipeline on the bed of Lake Michigan, environmentalists claim.

Critics of the 65-year-old gas and oil pipeline say new analysis of former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s (R) December deal with the Canadian energy company show it didn’t adequately address the risk Michigan faces for such a worst-case scenario.

A spill could occur during the seven to 10 years Enbridge has to replace the four-mile, underwater segment of Line 5 with an under-the-lake tunnel.
