Egypt Fines Russian Oil Tanker Operator After Copter Crew Spots Red Sea Pollution

CAIRO—Egypt’s Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs May 3 fined the operator of an oil tanker flying the Russian flag 600,000 Egyptian pounds ($108,000) for releasing oil into the Red Sea.

The ministry did not identify the operator but confirmed to BNA that the ship was registered in Russia.

The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), the ministry’s executive arm, told BNA May 6 that the Russian tanker’s crew had “dumped” a “large amount” of oil waste—crude oil that is left over after processing—into the southern section of the sea near Ras Ghareb in April.
