The Energy Department is heading toward greater enforcement of efficiency standards on appliances, moving to roll back key provisions of a Trump-era rule that critics say slowed the program.

The department has finalized revisions to a process rule, that governs procedures for its Appliance and Equipment Standards Program, according to a pre-publication notice in the Federal Register Friday.

The final rule eliminates a strict minimum energy savings threshold to set a standard, loosens requirements to use manufacturer-developed testing procedures, and moves to reinstate a negotiation process that could lead to quicker standards.
