LIMA, Peru—An appellate court in Ecuador has upheld a $9.5 billion judgment against Chevron Corp., plus another $8.6 billion if Chevron fails to apologize to the plaintiffs, in a nearly two-decade legal battle over contamination (Aguinda v. ChevronTexaco).
In the Jan. 3 ruling, the Superior Court of Novae Loja in the jungle province of Sucumbios upheld a February 2011 ruling on environmental damage and harm to the health of indigenous peoples in the northeastern jungle. The appellate court rejected the plaintiffs’ request to increase the $9.5 billion fine.
“The settlement increases to $18 billion if Chevron does not apologize. It is the most important and expensive apology in the world.”
