Ecuador Considers Legislation to Ban Single-Use Plastic

Ecuador’s government wants new mayors of the country’s major cities to be allies in the design of solid waste policies, starting with single-use plastics.

Newly elected mayors took office May 14 and President Lenin Moreno’s government has already organized to meet with the representatives from the three biggest cities—Cuenca, Guayaquil, and Quito, the capital—on May 21 to start planning new waste management policies and practices.

“We are going to sit down and start coordinating strategies. The important thing here is raising awareness and not imposing anything. Imposition will only generate resistance,” Environment Minister Marcelo Mata told Bloomberg Environment ...
