Eastern States Call for Daily Power-Plant Pollution Controls (1)

Maryland was successful in persuading its eastern neighbors that Pennsylvania needs to curb its power plant pollution.

The 12 states and the District of Columbia making up the Ozone Transport Commission voted 9-2 on Tuesday to act on a petition from Maryland that would recommend the Environmental Protection Agency require Pennsylvania to run controls daily to curb ozone-forming pollution from its power plants.

Maryland’s petition said Pennsylvania’s rules allow electricity generating units, including coal-fired power plants, to average their emissions over a 30-day period.
