DuPont, Corteva Must Face Cities’ Lawsuits Over PFAS in Water

DuPont de Nemours and Corteva must face lawsuits by municipalities in Massachusetts, Florida, and South Dakota that say old DuPont spun off its chemicals business to avoid liability for PFAS contamination, a South Carolina federal court ruled.

Stuart, Fla., Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ayer, Mass., say their drinking water supply is contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, including perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, PFOS. The contamination is due to the manufacturing, marketing, and selling of products that contained PFAS, even though the companies knew the substances would be released into the environment, their lawsuits say.
