Duke Aims to Eliminate Methane Leaks From Supply Chain by 2030

Power giant Duke Energy Corp. aims to eliminate methane leaks from its natural gas pipeline system and its suppliers in a bid to shrink its environmental footprint.

“I believe natural gas is a part of the cleaner energy solution,” said Sasha Weintraub, senior vice president of Duke’s gas business. But “we have to have low methane emissions.”

Methane, the primary ingredient in natural gas, is many times more potent than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere. With gas now comprising the largest share of U.S. power generation, methane leaks from gas fields and pipelines have stoked greater concern.
