DTE Energy Accelerates Plan to Close Its Last Two Coal Plants

DTE Energy Co., which provides electricity to 2.3 million customers in southeast Michigan, will stop using coal by 2035 after accelerating plans to close two power plants.

The Detroit-based company will stop burning coal at the Belle River plant by 2026, two years earlier than planned, and convert it to run on natural gas, according to a statement Thursday. DTE will begin a phased retirement of its Monroe coal plant in 2028, nearly 12 years sooner than planned.
