DNC Protesters’ First Amendment Claims Partially Dismissed

A federal judge in Chicago has dismissed part of a First Amendment challenge to the city’s parade regulations in a case stemming from plans to protest last year’s Democratic National Convention.

Allowed to continue was protesters’ challenge to a requirement for permit recipients to reimburse the city for damages arising from their event and indemnify the city against any third-party claims “arising out of or caused by” the parade.

That presents “constitutional difficulties,” Judge Thomas Durkin of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois wrote in an order Monday, given that the First Amendment generally restricts ...
