The giant planned Pebble Mine in southern Alaska secured a final environmental impact review from the Army Corps of Engineers, marking a major step in the mine’s long journey toward permitting and eventual production, environmental groups said late Thursday.
The assessment appears to be good news for Vancouver-based Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., which hopes to build a large copper and gold mine on the site near Bristol Bay, but a blow to groups that argue it would irreparably harm Indigenous communities and the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery.
