Denmark’s Environmental Protection Agency said seven domestic companies that have imported teak from Myanmar over the last four years violated the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), which requires importers to carry out due diligence to prevent illegally logged timber from entering the European Union.
None of the audited companies could demonstrate that they had minimized the risk of importing illegal timber as the EUTR regulation requires, the agency said. And current conditions meant that so-called chain of custody certification, which verifies that timber originates from responsibly managed forests, could not apply to Myanmar teak, it said March 15.
