Multiple agencies’ concerns over what they see as too-strict groundwater cleanup guidelines for two ubiquitous chemicals have slowed an EPA rulemaking, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) said in a letter March 14.
The Environmental Protection Agency is drafting recommended standards to clean up groundwater contaminated by two chemicals known as PFOA and PFOS. The chemicals, found in drinking water supplies across the country, are part of an environmentally persistent family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The standards are part of a notice (RIN:2050-ZA15) under review at the White House Office of Management and Budget.
