Data Gaps Preventing PFAS Safety Finding for Cosmetics, FDA Says

No conclusions can be made about the safety of PFAS in cosmetics due to a lack of publicly available data, the FDA said in a report offering insights into the chemicals’ use and the cosmetics that contain them.

The Food and Drug Administration released a Congressionally-mandated report Monday evaluating the use of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in cosmetic products.

PFAS are commonly used to stabilize emulsions, as bulking agents, and for their ability to repel oil and water. They also improve product durability, according to the report.
