Danish Industry Welcomes Energy Strategy to Reduce Consumption, Overhaul Taxes

COPENHAGEN—A national plan to create a “society based on renewable energy” has been welcomed by Denmark’s ruling left-leaning government, opposition parties, and the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI).

The plan commits Denmark to a 12 percent reduction in gross energy consumption by 2020 from 2006 levels and pledges that at least 35 percent of the country’s total energy will come from renewable sources by 2020. It said about 50 percent of Danish electricity will come from wind power by 2020, compared to one-quarter today. The nation already has signaled its intention to become fossil-fuel-free by 2050.
