Cyber Protections Get Approved for Software, Hardware on Electric Grid

Computer software and hardware running the U.S. electric grid will have more stringent cybersecurity requirements under standards a federal energy regulator completed Oct. 18.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s three new supply-chain risk-management cybersecurity standards require entities such as generators and transmission owners to implement security controls to manage industrial control system hardware, software, and networking services used for the grid.

The U.S. utility sector faces millions of attempted cyberintrusions a day. In March, the Department of Homeland Security revealed that Russians targeted hundreds of energy and nonenergy companies’ networks in 2017.
