Pacific Gas & Electric Co. should pay a $1.6 billion fine for a deadly September 2010 fire, its gas transmissions operations and faulty recordkeeping, under a proposal by California Public Utilities Commission President Michael Picker, CPUC said March 13.
The proposed penalty is an alternate to that proposed by administrative law judges and is $200 million higher than the $1.4 billion ALJs recommended last fall that consumer groups and San Bruno complained was too low and enriched the state’s general fund rather than addressing pipeline safety 38 CRR 952, 9/8/14, 171 DEN A-7, 9/4/14.
