Mine Faces Closure After Chile Court Denies Blasting Permit (1)

The owners of Mina Invierno SA say a court’s revocation of an environmental license to use explosives could force the closure of its coal mine in Chile.

The Third Environmental Court in Valdivia Aug. 21 upheld an injunction that environmentalists brought against Mina Invierno, which was granted the environmental license allowing it to use blasting at the open-pit operation last year.

The company, a joint venture between industrial conglomerate Empresas Copec SA and shipping group Ultramar Group of Chile, has 15 days to lodge an appeal with the Supreme Court in the capital Santiago, a company ...
