Coal Company to Fund West Virginia Water Pollution Project

A West Virginia coal mine operator will fund a water pollution abatement project as part of an agreement reached with environmental groups.

Shepard Boone Coal Co. will pay Appalachian Headwaters $51,500 to carry out the Supplemental Environmental Project in the Coal River Watershed, according to the proposed consent decree filed May 30 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia (Ohio Valley Envtl. Coal., Inc. v. Shepard Boone Coal Co., S.D. W.Va., No. 2:15-cv-01488, proposed consent decree filed 5/30/17).

Shepard Boone will also pay roughly $50,000 in attorneys’ fees and expert expenses.
